The Michelle Chapa Foundation

Strengthening Mental Health Systems In Tanzania and Across Africa! We advance the integration of mental health into Primary and Community healthcare through policy reform, evidence translation and scalable service models…promoting rights- based, accessible care for all.

About Us

We are a mental health systems and policy organization advancing the integration of mental health into primary and community healthcare in Tanzania and across Africa, through evidence translation, policy reform, and scalable service models, with a strong focus on suicide prevention and rights-based care.

The Michelle Chapa Foundation was established in response to the growing burden of mental health conditions across Africa and the persistent gaps in access to equitable, community-based care. Despite increasing evidence on what works, mental health systems remain underfunded, centralized, and poorly integrated into primary healthcare…limiting access for most people.

Grounded in the lived experience, the Foundation recognizes that many individuals struggle in silence due to stigma, limited awareness, and lack of accessible support systems. We work to bridge the gap between evidence, communities, and policymakers; advancing rights-based, inclusive mental health systems that are accessible to all.

Our Partners

We collaborate with governments, institutions and partners to strengthen mental health systems and advance the integration of mental health into primary and community healthcare across Africa.
