Our Work

Our work currently focuses on Suicide prevention, rights- based mental health reform and strengthening primary and community mental healthcare systems in Tanzania while contributing to broader systems change across Africa.

We work across policy, health systems and communities to strengthen mental health care in Tanzania and across the continent. Our approach focuses on translating evidence into action, strengthening primary and community care, advancing rights- based policies and engaging communities to promote early support, inclusion and access to care.

Through these interconnected areas, we aim to build accessible, equitable and sustainable mental health systems. We collaborate with governments, partners and communities to advance integrated, rights- based mental health care and strengthen long- term system reform.

policy and system advocacy

What we do:

We work with government, institutions and partners to strengthen mental health systems through policy reform, suicide prevention advocacy and rights- based approaches. Our work focuses on advancing integrated mental health systems, promoting public health approaches to suicide prevention and supporting legal and policy environments that protect dignity, human rights and access to care. What this includes:
  • Engaging government and parliamentary stakeholders on mental health and suicide prevention priorities.
  • Advocating for integration of mental health and suicide prevention into primary healthcare systems.
  • Supporting legal and policy reforms aligned with international human rights standards, including the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities(CRPD).
  • Promoting evidence- informed and public health approaches to suicide prevention, early intervention and access to care.
  • Supporting dialogue and advocacy around legal reform, including decriminalization approaches that strengthen help- seeking and reduce stigma.

primary and community health capacity strengthening

what we do:

We support the development of a health workforce that can deliver accessible, rights- based mental health care at community level. What this includes:
  • Training healthcare providers in mental health care and support.
  • Strengthening the role of  community health workers in early identification and support.
  • promoting rights- based, person- centred approaches in primary healthcare settings

community engagement and awareness

what we do:

We work with communities to reduce stigma, strengthen understanding of mental health, and promote early help- seeking. What this includes:
  • Designing awareness initiatives that connect education to action and support
  • Ensuring inclusion of lived experience in programs and advocacy
  • Promoting early recognition of mental health challenges and pathways to care.

evidence to policy translation

what we do:

We transform research and evidence into practical tools that inform decision- making and strengthen mental health systems. What this includes:
  • Developing clear, accessible policy briefs
  • Creating simplified knowledge products for decision makers and communities
  • Facilitating dialogue between researchers, policymakers and practitioners to support evidence- informed action
