Decoding BMI: Understanding Body Mass Index and Its Implications for Health

Today, let’s discuss the 80/20 lifestyle for maintaining a healthy diet, emphasizing 80% healthy eating and allowing 20% flexibility for indulgence.
Let’s begin by understanding Body Mass Index (BMI). BMI is calculated by dividing a person’s weight in kilograms by the square of their height in meters. While BMI screens for weight categories that may pose health risks, it does not provide a complete picture of body fatness or overall health.
For example, my weight is 79kg and my height is 156cm (1.56m):
BMI = 79 / (1.56 x 1.56)
BMI = 79 / 2.4336
BMI = 32.46
What does this indicate?
BMI Ranges and Classifications:
– Underweight: Below 18.5
– Normal weight: 18.5 – 24.9
– Overweight: 25.0 – 29.9
– Moderately Obese: 30.0 – 35
– Severely Obese: 35 – 40
– Very severe Obese: Above 40
This means that Michelle falls under the category of Moderately Obese. Remember, the journey of weight loss is personal, and it’s essential not to compare yourself to others.
